Clifford Gibson was born on April 17, 1901 in Louisville, Kentucky.  He moved to St. Louis in the 1920s mainly playing in clubs and recorded four sites on two different labels between 1929 and 1931.  He is considered one of the earliest urban blues performers with a guitar playing style that resembles that of Lonnie Johnson although he has a greater emphasis on improvisation.  After accompanying Jimmie Rodgers on the single "Let Me Be Your Side Track" he then spent the best part of three decades playing in the streets of St. Louis.  He reappeared in 1960 with his recordings on the Bobbin label and then worked at St. Louis Gaslight Square before his death on December 21, 1963.
