Joshus Barnes Howell (Peg Leg Howell) was born in Eatonton, Georgia on March 3, 1888. He is a self taught guitarist and at the age of twenty-one he worked as a street singer in Atlanta. He started as a country blues player before moving on to a 12-bar style later. He is one of the earliest country blues performers to be recorded and has twenty-eight sides of recordings between 1926 and 1929. His repertoire is diverse and includes both blues and up-tempo ragtime songs.
