Burl "Jaybird" Coleman was born in Gainesville, Alabama in 1896. He learnt to play harmonica around 1908 and between 1927 and 1930 he recorded eleven sides. He played an unusual role of accompanying his own vocals with the harmonica. He has, probably one of the richest tones among all recorded blues harmonica players. He was mostly inactive in the last 20 years before his death on January 28, 1950.
